Acts of Power
a note from Shaun
Early on in our work together, Betsy, Jo and I were keenly aware that our coming together was bigger than simply making a joyful noise.  Certainly, the music has been the focus and the center of our connection.  But quickly on, we felt the power moving through us that was built by the synergy of our connections.  Often, one or more of us would be moved to tears in the midst of learning a particular song.  (This frequently happened in the midst of deep belly laughter.)

Of course, there’s plenty of talk-connection happening in our weekly sessions as well.  We weave the truths of our lives through our time together, catching up on the latest news, but always, somehow, in a sacred way.  Somehow each time we come together we three are always very aware that we are entering sacred ground together.  We find ourselves smudging; we light candles to the four directions; we sink in, quiet down; we invoke our muses, our power animals, our allies.  And then we sing.

Obviously, our songs engender this vibration as well.  Our songs are our prayers.  They connect us to where we receive comfort, sustenance and guidance.  In some songs, we directly call our allies in nonordinary reality; others are sung by our allies calling us!  Some songs directly speak to the elements of the natural world, to the power we experience when we connect with wind, water, fire, and Earth.  And even the songs that don’t directly invoke the sacred, still connect us with deeper parts of ourselves, our souls, the human experience.  These just aren’t easy-listening, background-in-a-coffee-shop kind of tunes!

And so, over time, we’ve discovered that it is our work to carry this sense of the sacred everywhere we go as White Sage.

We coined the term “Acts of Power” as we prepared ourselves for our Helena Pagan Pride/Faerie Fest gig, back in July 2007.  Just imagining playing for people who “get it,” who blatantly, unabashedly love the Earth and all Her creations, was so exciting!  As we began to weave our set list together, we started asking ourselves, “What is our intention?”  And that simple act of exploring and setting an intention started the ball rolling.  We looked at our songs through new eyes.  What is each song’s intention?  Where does each song carry us?  What song would pick us up from that place, and carry us to the next leg of the journey?  And where do we want to end this song-cycle, what solid home do we want to bring our listeners to?

Let’s face it – we three have each been powerful shaman-priestesses for years, in our own right.  (And for generations before this one.)  We aren’t coming together just to find new harmonies and a funky bass line (although the funk is such a good thing!).  We are coming together, as our tag line says, to heal the world, one groovy song at a time.

"What is our intention?"

Now there’s a heck of an intention for you!  What do we mean by “healing”?  Well, when we look around, it’s pretty apparent that it’s humans who are in need of healing.  The plants, the animals, the stone people...they have not forgotten their place in the web of things.  It’s us who imagine we have fallen from grace.  With every stone we place on the great wall of civilization, we separate ourselves further from the truth of who we are.  We belong here.  We have a place here.  We can be loved here, if only we give ourselves permission to release our hard egoic belief systems and sink again into the energy field of the Earth.

It's not so much about healing, then, as it is about remembering.  Remembering our place in the beautiful, resonant, infinitely faceted web of all existence.  Remembering that we don’t have to be in control, we just have to be.  We don’t have to fix everything, or even anything, we just have to love what is.  We don’t have to build or create, we have to feel thank you deep in our bones.  (Maybe we don't have to feel it...maybe we can allow, invite, gift ourselves with permission to dance it!)

So when you come to hear us play, come not only to listen, but to witness.  And come not only to witness, but to participate.  We invite you to enter into creating Acts of Power with us.  Come and show up to the Divine which surrounds you.  Come and sink into the Power which embraces you.  Come and be changed.  Come, and remember the fullness of who you truly are.
